Women's Lacrosse Headed To Regional Final

5/8/04 - Middlebury took an 8-3 halftime lead and never looked back as they picked up a 10-5 win over Cortland State in an NCAA Regional on Kohn Field. The Panthers will take on Wheaton, a 14-13 winner over William Smith, in the NCAA Regional final on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

Sara Gorman gave Cortland a 1-0 lead at the 23:08 mark as she found the back of the net. Middlebury answered with four straight to take a 4-1 lead with 14:48 left in the first half. Michele Bergofsky netted the first goal, followed by Nuala O'Donohoe's first of five on the day, and a pair from Beth Seeley. Jennifer Willis answered for the Red Dragons, before O'Donohoe and Gorman exchanged goals to make it a 5-3 Middlebury lead. The Panthers closed the half on a 3-0 run to take an 8-3 lead into the break.

The second half was played at a much slower pace with each team netting just a pair of goals. Cortland cut the lead to 8-5 with Gorman's third of the day at 13:37, and a tally from Ali Bourgal at 11:49. Middlebury answered just 1:06 later as O'Donohoe scored her fourth goal of the afternoon. The Panthers leading scorer closed out the scoring at 5:55 to make it a 10-5 final.

O'Donohoe led the Panthers with five goals, while Seeley added two. Gorman paced the Red Dragons with three goals on the afternoon. Middlebury out shot Cortland 25-7, as Sarah Grenert made five saves for Middlebury and Regina Grosso made 11 saves for Cortland.
