Women's Lacrosse Wins Sixth Straight NESCAC Crown
May 7, 2006
The Middlebury women's lacrosse team won its sixth consecutive NESCAC Championship with a 14-8 win over Bowdoin on Kohn Field. The Panthers receive an automatic bid to the 2006 NCAA Tournament and are expected to host a regional next weekend. Bowdoin will hope for an at-large bid to the tournament when the pairings are announced on CSTV Sunday night at 9:00 p.m.
Leading 4-3, Middlebury's Kim Walker and Elizabeth Renehan scored quick goals to give the Panthers a 6-3 lead with 11:24 left in the first half. Bridget Keating answered for Bowdoin before the teams split the final two goals of the half to make it a 7-5 game.
Keating cut the lead to 7-6 at 21:49 of the second half, before Middlebury added a pair to take a 9-6 lead. Bowdoin again answered, as did Liza Humes for Middlebury to keep it a three-goal game at 10-7 with 16:03 remaining. Kate Donoghue scored a free position goal to bring the Polar Bears within two at 15:58, but that's as close as they'd come as Middlebury ran off four straight, two by Claire Edelen, to seal the win.
Renehan ended the game with four goals, Walker scored three, while Humes, Edelen and Schuyler Winstead had two goals apiece. Blair Bowie made 15 saves in goal to earn the win.
