Women's Soccer To Honor Sally Guard

April 21, 2006

The Middlebury women's soccer team has a new end of the season award, named in honor of alumnus Sally Guard '84, who passed away after a struggle with breast cancer. The SAL Leadership Award is presented to the member of the Middlebury College Women's Soccer Program who has led her team with courage, integrity, support, and caring both on and off the pitch, serving as a resource and an inspiration to her teammates and coaches.

Sally was a member of the Middlebury College women's soccer team from '80-'83, playing under then head coach, and current Director of Athletics, Russ Reilly. She went on to work at Sports Illustrated, where she worked until 2000.

This year's winner of the award will be Ainsley Close, who will receive the award in a brief ceremony held in the Pepin Lobby on Saturday, April 22nd. Sally's husband and two children will be on campus for the ceremony. The award was endowed by Grayle Howlett '81, a close friend of Sally's and a Middlebury alumnus.
