Women's Tennis To Host NESCAC Championship

4/26/05 - Middlebury College will host the 2005 NESCAC Women's Tennis Championship Friday, April 29th through Sunday May 1st. Defending NESCAC Co-Champion and 2004 National Runner-Up Amherst enters the competition ranked first in the Northeast Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Rankings. Ranked second is Middlebury, followed by Tufts, defending NESCAC Co-Champion Williams, and Bowdoin, 4th, 5th and 6th respectively.
The NESCAC tournament features 19 of the top 30 female singles players in the northeast as well as 12 of the top 20 doubles teams. Amherst will be led by senior Rachel Holt, ranked first in both singles and doubles. Challenging Holt in the top singles flight will be Tufts sophomore Jennifer Luten, ranked second in the ITA regional rankings, and Colby senior Sarah Hughes who advanced to the NESCAC semifinals last year.
In the doubles draw, the top four pairs in the Northeast will compete in the NESCAC Championship. Holt and senior partner Tristan Hedrick are ranked at the top and reached the semifinals of last year's championship. Behind the Amherst duo is a group of talented sophomore pairs: Luten and Kylyn Deary of Tufts and Middlebury's Claire Smyser and Jackie Ross. Rounding out the top doubles teams are Hughes and sophomore Allison Dunn of Colby.
The flighted tournament gets underway at 12:00 p.m. on Friday at the Middlebury Tennis Courts. Play will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. There will be three singles flights ("A" flight of 1st and 2nd singles, "B" flight of 3rd and 4th singles, and "C" flight of 5th and 6th singles), and three doubles flights which score toward the team championship. The "D" flight scores and the #4 doubles draw do not score. In the event of poor weather, portions of the tournament may be moved indoors.
