Women's Tennis Wins NEWITT Title

10/17/04 - The Middlebury College women's tennis team turned in a great team performance last weekend as they captured the New England Intercollegiate Women's Tennis Tournament hosted by Amherst College. The Panthers won two singles and one doubles flight to capture the team title.
In singles action, both sophomore Amy Roche (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) and first-year player Amanda Berck (Roslyn, N.Y.) each won their respective singles brackets. Roche won the #2 bracket, earning three wins on her way to the title match, where she won the first set before her opponent retired. Berck won four straight-set matches, including a 6-1, 6-1 win in the title dual.
Senior Lauren Ready (Lexington, Mass.) and first-year player Amy Berkman (Shelburne, Vt.) both were solid on the weekend, earning spots in the championship matches. Ready was the winner of three straight-set matches at #5 before falling 6-0, 6-2 in the finals. Berkman did the same at #6, even losing the final by the same score as her teammate.
Sophomore Jackie Ross (Ipswich, Mass.) was also tough in singles play, winning a pair of matches before falling 6-3, 5-7, 6-1 in the semifinals.
In doubles action, the Panthers advanced all three of their teams into championship matches. In the #3 flight, sophomore Emily Holick (Sudbury, Mass.) and first-year player Julie Weinberger (Chappaqua, N.Y.) won a tight championship match by a score of 9-8 (5), after earning three previous wins en route to the title. In the #1 flight, Ross and sophomore Claire Smyser (Houston, Texas) advanced to the finals with three wins before being eliminated 8-2 in the final match. Roche/Berck did the same, falling in a hard-fought final, 9-7.
