May 15, 2013
Two Middlebury College women’s tennis players were recently honored with the International Tennis Association (ITA) announced its regional awards. First-year player Ria Gerger (Houston, Texas) was named the Northeast Rookie of the Year, while senior Leah Kepping (Northport, N.Y.) earned the Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship award.
Gerger has enjoyed a solid rookie season for the Panthers, playing in the #2 singles slot. The first-year player owns a 24-5 mark and has won her last seven matches. Prior to that, she had a five match winning streak as well as a six-match streak earlier in the season. All but three of her wins this season have been in straight sets, while she owns a doubles record of 22-6.
Kepping’s award recognizes outstanding individuals in all divisions at the regional and national level. In August the national winners are honored during a special ceremony hosted by the USTA during Arthur Ashe Kids' Day inside Ashe Stadium. This award which dates back to 1982, goes to NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and JUCO men's and women's players who have exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements. This season, Kepping owns a 13-10 mark in singles play and is 16-12 in doubles competition, where she will compete at the NCAA’s.
