Panther Women Keep Spring Record Perfect with 7-2 Win Over M.I.T.

The sixth-ranked Middlebury women’s tennis team continued its hot start to the spring schedule with a 7-2 victory over 17th-ranked M.I.T. The Panthers (3-0) will next take to the court for five matches out in California during its spring break trip starting with a match against 12th-ranked Pomona-Pitzer next Saturday at 2:00 p.m.

Middlebury jumped out to a 2-1 edge after doubles’ action. The Panther tandem of Lauren Amos and Margot Marchese secured the first point at No. 3 doubles with an 8-2 victory over Michelle Dutt and Krystal Lai. At No. 2, the duo of Alexandra Fields and Jennifer Sundstrom battled to a 9-8 (10-8) victory against Victoria Tam and Elysa Kohrs. M.I.T. (11-2) grabbed its point in the top flight when Lauren Quisenberry and Julia Hsu edged Middlebury’s Ria Gerger and Kaysee Orozco, 8-6.  

In singles play, the Panthers cruised to straight-set wins in the top-five flights. Gerger was victorious at No. 1 (6-1, 6-3) against Quisenberry, while Orozco was next off the court with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 3 against Wendy Kong. Fields won at No. 2 by identical 6-3, 6-3 scores over Kohrs, while Marchese (6-2, 6-4) and Dorrie Paradies (6-4, 6-2) against Tam and Vynnie Kong at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.

The Engineers secured their lone point of individual play at No. 6 when Lai defeated Sadie Shackelford in a three-set marathon by scores of 3-6, 6-4, 11-9.
