The eighth-ranked Middlebury women’s tennis team breezed by 12th-ranked University of Chicago by an 8-1 score Friday afternoon in a match played in Carpenteria, California. The Panther women finish their trip to the west coast with a 6-2 record, and will have a little more than a week off before playing host to second-ranked Williams on Sunday, April 6.

In doubles, Middlebury grabbed all three points. In the top slot, the Panther duo of Kaysee Orozco and Ria Gerger started things off with an 8-2 victory against Tiffany Chen and Megan Tang. In the second flight, the duo of Jennifer Sundstrom and Alexandra Fields produced a similar result with an 8-2 win over Helen Sdvizhkov and Kelsey McGillis.

The third flight was the tightest battle as the Middlebury tandem of Lauren Amos and Margot Marchese edged Sruthi Ramaswami and Maggie Schumann, 8-6.

During singles play, the Panthers were victorious through the top-five slots in straight sets. Gerger, ranked third in the ITA Northeast region, had little trouble with Central region’s top-ranked player in Tang, winning 6-1, 6-1. Marchese was the next off the court at #4 with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over McGillis, while Orozco was right behind in the third spot with a 6-3, 6-4 win against Sdvizhkov.

The Maroons earned their point in the sixth flight. Chicago’s Stephanie Lee endured a three-set match with Amos, emerging with a 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 win.

The last two matches off the courts were the #2 and #5 matches. Fields squeezed by Chen in the first set at #2 with a 7-6 (7-5) score, before winning the second set, 6-2. At #5, Dorrie Paradies defeated Ramaswami 7-5, 6-2.
