Gerger, Fields Selected All-Americans

Two Middlebury women’s tennis players were named All-Americans in singles when the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) released its honorees. Sophomore Ria Gerger (Houston, Texas) was named an All-American in singles for the second-consecutive year, while rookie Alexandra Fields (Coral Gables, Fla.) notched her first career accolade.

Ria GergerA two-time All-American in singles, Gerger squared off with the opponents’ top player all season. She posted an 18-7 record, including three wins in the 2013 USTA/ITA Division III Women’s New England Regional Championship, before falling in the quarterfinals. A 2013 and 2014 NCAA participant as an individual, Gerger advanced to the quarterfinal round each year before falling to the eventual national champion both times.

Alexandra FieldsSelected as both the ITA’s National Rookie of the Year as well as the Northeast Region’s Rookie of the Year, Fields played in one of the top-two singles slots throughout the season. She enjoyed a successful first year donning the blue and white with a 14-8 record, including a 1-1 mark in the NCAA Singles Tournament falling in the round of 16. Also named a first-team All-NESCAC honoree for her individual play, she opened her career with five wins in her first six collegiate matches.  

As a team, Middlebury posted an 11-8 record against many of the nation’s top teams. The Panthers finished the year ranked #10 nationally and #4 in the Northeast region.
