Wilkerson continues to assist the cross country and track programs after coaching at Texas A&M for the previous three years. While at Texas A&M, she obtained her masters degree in Sport Management while also lecturing on Health and Kinesiology.

Prior to her coaching experience, Wilkerson was an All-American track athlete at Rice University '93. She was a four-year member of the cross country and track teams, serving as captain during her senior year. Also during her final season, she earned All-American status in the 3000 meters track event.

Following her collegiate career, she was a U.S. Track & Field National Qualifier in the 10,000 meters in 1995. The following year, Wilkerson was a U.S. Olympic trials qualifier in the same event.
