Years at Midd: 31
Smith enters his 31st season on the Middlebury staff and his 24th season at the helm of the baseball program. Smith also served as an assistant football coach at the College from 1979 to 1994, and he is currently director of club sports and the intramural programs at Middlebury.
In the spring of '06, Smith led the team to its most successful season in school history. The team made its first NESCAC Tournament appearance, winning the title and advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in the program's history. The squad broke over 10 single-season team records, while setting a new school mark with 26 wins. For the great season, Smith was named the NESCAC Coach of the Year.
In '99, he received the "Edward P. Markey Award" given by St. Michael's College to the person who has made outstanding contributions to Vermont collegiate baseball. Following the 20-win season in '99, Smith was named the NESCAC coach of the year.
Smith played football at the University of Delaware, where he graduated in '72. After commencement, he took a graduate assistant job at the University of Maine. He became a full-time assistant coach the next year and received his master's degree there in '76. Smith then took an assistant football coaching job at Maine Maritime Academy, where he served 1976-77, and an assistant job at Gettysburg in the fall of '78, before arriving at Middlebury in the fall of '79.
