McCullough 1911 - 2009
During the fall 2008 and spring of 2009 the McCullough Student Center received a major renovations - upgrading infrastructure, increasing accessibility and improving functionality.
This project is now complete.
The following is a chronology of the renovation as it was occuring. Updated photos of the project will be available at this location soon.
Michael Dennis and Associates was selected as the architect for the project
Middlebury students were majorly involved in the redesign process. Several student focus groups were conducted prior to the project in order to gain insight into what students envisioned for the center.
McCullough Student Center renovation will include:
- Improving the envelope of the building to provide better insulation and ventilation.
- Returning the Social Space stage to its original 1911 dimensions.
- Removing the balcony from the Social Space
- Adding climate control to the Social Space
- Installing a new retractable seating unit in the Social Space increasing capacity to over 400.
- Installing new lighting, projection and sound systems in the Social Space
- Installing a new floor in the Student Social Space
- Constructing a new Green Room under the stage area.
- A new elevator will be installed to allow access from the Social Space to the stage and Green Room.
- A new ramp will be installed to the McCullough Mail Room and the current lift removed.
- Renovations to the lower entrance area to the Grille and Box Office.
During the Project:
- The Grille and Juice Bar will remain open during the renovation.
- ACE, CCAL, MCAB, SGA and Student Employment will remain in their spaces during the renovation.
- MiddXpress will be relocated temporarily to the current Game Room within the Grille.
- The Mail Room will be relocated to a temporary facility adjacent to the Student Center.
- The Box Office will be relocated to the Crest Room (Room 220) in McCullough.
Renovation update - August 21, 2008
Construction work has started on the interior of McCullough and will result in relocation of the CFA Box Office, the MiddExpress Convenience Store, and the Student Mail Center.
The Box Office has moved to the Crest Room in the west turret of McCullough - sharing space for the semester with the SGA and MCAB. Box office business hours are Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and 7:00-10:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Tickets can also be purchased online beginning September 8th at www.middlebury.edu/arts/tickets or by phone at x6433.
MiddExpress is currently closed, but is scheduled to re-open the week of August 25th in the game room area of the Juice Bar. Because of limited space, the variety of offerings for MiddExpress will be reduced.
The Student Mail Center and the mail boxes will move into the trailer complex located between McCullough and the Service Building. It is anticipated that this move will begin on Friday, August 22nd and continue through the weekend. The mail boxes will be up and running in their new location on Monday, August 22nd.
In addition to the moves, starting on Saturday, Aug 23rd, access to Juice Bar and Grille will be diverted through a new temporary doorway to allow demolition and new construction work to occur in the location of the current CFA Box Office and MiddExpress.
Renovation update - September 15, 2008
Construction work continues with the removal of the balcony and staircases.
Renovation update - October 18, 2008
Work has begun on the stairwell and dimmer room. The lower level framing for the Box Office, elevator room and MiddXpress are now complete.
Renovation update - November 7, 2008
The stage right door has been cut through the wall to allow for better access to the stage. The old floor has mostly been removed and the joists reinforced.
Renovation update - November 18, 2008
Work is now complete on the laying of the new floor and the installation of the front of house lighting systems.
Renovation update - December 16, 2008
With the main and stage flooring complete crews have moved on to other aspects of construction.
Work in progressing in the mailroom, MiddXpress and Box Office.
The Green Room bathroom fixtures have been installed and work has begun on install the accoustic wall hangings.
Our main seating unit has been installed.
And the sound and lighting units are progressing.
