Butch's Team: The purpose of our organization is to provide Middlebury community member Butch Varno with tutors, mentors, big brothers and sisters, and general assistance with activity. These interactions include activities such as helping Butch to study topics of his choosing, read, attend functions on campus, and simply be an active participant in the community.
Community Friends Program: Community Friends is a community-based mentoring program that matches Middlebury College volunteers with local children. Mentors and kids schedule times to meet each week to swim, bike, hike, or enjoy a Middlebury College hockey game. Monthly events are planned to bring pairs of Community Friends together.
Foundation for Excellent Schools (FES): FES is a group of college students who mentor at-risk students in elementary, middle, and high school. FES mentors go once or twice a week to ten different schools in both the New York and Vermont areas to participate in one-on-one mentoring with these students for about an hour each time. FES mentors also create events to bring students to the Middlebury campus to enhance their awareness of the possibility of a college education.
Habitat for Humanity: The Middlebury College Habitat for Humanity campus chapter is a growing student club that provides fun volunteer opportunities throughout the school year. The club works closely with the local Addison County Habitat for Humanity affiliate helping with construction and organizing fundraisers to ensure future building projects. Middlebury College Habitat for Humanity also has an annual spring break trip, in which 15-20 students drive south for a week of building homes, friendships, and communities. If you are looking for an opportunity to help others, Habitat for Humanity Hits the Nail on the Head.
Incaceration in Question (IIQ): This organization promotes on-campus awareness about prisoners’ rights and prison reform and provides a forum in which to question the efficacy and justness of the American justice system and investigate alternate solutions. It also aims to promote opportunities for Middlebury students to volunteer at local correctional facilities and to correspond with inmates and prison rights advocacy groups.
Middlebury Alternative Breaks (MAlt): MAlt provides students with a variety of affordable opportunities to volunteer during their February break and brings a greater awareness of social and environmental issues to students by facilitating active engagement and reflection through a mutually beneficial volunteer experience.
Page 1 Literacy Project: Students, faculty, and staff have taken on the challenge of raising awareness of literacy issues and promoting reading within Addison County as the local focus of the Bicentennial Service project. There are numerous levels of involvement in the Page 1 Project, some of which include receiving regular updates through Majordomo, participating in campus or community events, making a donation during a book drive, or volunteering in one of the literacy service projects. Currently, Page 1 volunteers work as reading buddies in elementary after-school programs, tutor at the middle school, provide story-time for preschool children in home day cares, and tutor adult learners. Work-study tutoring positions are also available. Please call the Page 1 office at extension 3010 for more information. Volunteer Services Organization (VSO): The Volunteer Service Organization (VSO) is committed to providing the Middlebury College student body with a multitude of community service opportunities.
