People join drumming circles to experience the joy of communicating rhythmically and to make new music—born in the moment, in the community of other drummers. |
Everyone, gather together
Djembe drums originated in West Africa and are used to gather villagers together, often for special events that include drumming, dancing, and singing. Everyone who comes participates.
At Middlebury, we try to spread the spirit of the djembe throughout campus. We seek to encourage an inclusive, engaged, and welcoming community, in which everyone participates within an atmosphere of mutual respect.
The entire community works to ensure that diversity is recognized as an essential aspect of Middlebury, one of the key elements in making the College a vibrant, academically challenging, and culturally rich place.
Our Door Is Open
If you have concerns or ideas related to the Middlebury community; how you fit in; issues related to disability, identity, campus climate, or respectful treatment; how we can help you explore and share your interests; or anything else that relates to our becoming a more open and engaged community, we’d like to hear from you.
Middlebury and Its Vermont Location
Vermont was an independent republic for 14 years before it joined the United States as the 14th state in 1791. Its constitution—which preceded the U.S. Constitution by more than a decade—was the first to abolish slavery in the New World, the first to allow men who did not own land to vote, and the first to establish public schools. More recently, it was the first state to recognize civil unions between partners of the same sex.
Middlebury College has followed in that proud tradition, being the first to graduate an African American in 1823, one of the first to enroll women alongside men, and one of the first to make cultural fluency an integral part of the curriculum.
Vermont has a long history of working for social justice, inclusiveness, and building community, and that history continues today on the Middlebury campus.
We believe that it is possible for people from all over the world, of every race, religion, political leaning, sexual orientation, or economic stratum to come here and thrive. We believe that it is possible to come here and not only learn about other people but to discover a lot about yourself.
