SEVIS (the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) is a U.S. government database for individuals in J (Exchange Visitor) visa status. Information is entered into SEVIS by International Student and Scholar Services, and a DS-2019 is produced from SEVIS based on this information.
As a J-1 Exchange Visitor, you must abide by the J-1 visa regulations. Failure to do so will make you "out of status." Being out of status has serious implications, including the possibility of not being able to finish your program. Please refer to the J-1 Exchange Visitor Guidelines for information on how to maintain your status.
Important SEVIS reminders:
* Your most-recently-issued DS-2019 is your "current" DS-2019 and is the one you will use to travel. * When you enter the U.S., make sure that the border official processes your DS-2019 by stamping a date in the top right corner and making the notation D/S (for Duration of Status).
* Upon entering the United States, you will receive an I-94 card. The I-94 card is a small white arrival/departure card that is usually stapled in your passport. The I-94 is the document stating the status you have been admitted to the U.S.
* You will receive a new I-94 card every time you enter the U.S. except if you travel to Canada, Mexico, or the adjacent islands. If you travel to Canada or Mexico or adjacent islands, the border official should not take your I-94 when you depart. You will use your same I-94 card upon your re-entry to the U.S
* Save all of your DS-2019s, and keep them in a safe place. This document proves that you maintained your status during your time at Middlebury. You may need your DS-2019 in the future, as many U.S. immigration processes require you to show your immigration status history.
