Congratulations on your admission to Middlebury College's summer programs! International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) assists all non-U.S. citizens / non-U.S. legal permanent residents who will study at the Middlebury College Language Schools and the Bread Loaf School of English (BLSE) at all our campuses within the U.S. Non-U.S. citizens / non-U.S. legal permanent residents attending the Language Schools or BLSE must have a nonimmigrant status which allows them to enroll in courses full-time. Most international students in our summer programs do so in F-1 (student) status. The Tourist (B-2) visa, Business (B-1) visa, and the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) do not allow enrollment in these programs.
To apply for an F-1 visa and enter the U.S. as an F-1 student, you must obtain an I-20 Certificate of Eligibility Form from Middlebury College. To obtain the I-20, please complete the I-20 application (available for downloading on the right-hand side of this screen), and send it to ISSS with all required supporting documents.
Once we have received the I-20 application and supporting materials, we will issue your I-20. We will send, by express mail service, your I-20 and instructions on how to apply for an F-1 visa. Due to visa wait times, we strongly encourage you to submit the I-20 application and supporting documents by mid-April.
ISSS issues I-20s for students who have been admitted to our summer programs and decide to enroll. For the Language Schools, in order to obtain an I-20, Language School students must also submit the $400 tuition deposit confirming attendance. Therefore, we encourage you to submit the enrollment deposit and the I-20 application as soon as possible to allow ample time for the entire visa application process.
If you are currently in the U.S. as an F-1 or J-1 student, you may not need to obtain a new I-20 or DS-2019 from Middlebury College. Please contact ISSS as soon as possible to verify that you will NOT need an I-20 or DS-2019 from Middlebury. Please see the Frequently Asked Questions to the right for more information.
ISSS does not handle admissions to our summer programs. To apply for admission to the Language Schools, please refer to the Language Schools or the Bread Loaf School of English web pages. If you are a non-U.S. citizen / non-U.S. permanent resident planning to attend the Bread Loaf Writer’s Conference in August, you must have a nonimmigrant status which allows you to both participate in the conference and, if applicable, accept on-site employment. We ask you to contact our office with questions about which visa classification may be right for you.
Note: If you receive financial aid from Middlebury College, you might have a tax obligation on any aid that exceeds tuition. You will receive a request for information from the College’s Tax Office this summer. It is your responsibility to provide the requested information in a timely manner.
If you have questions regarding your any visa or nonimmigrant status issues, please contact us. We are happy to assist you.
