Each year, Middlebury College welcomes several Teaching Assistants (TAs) to assist in the teaching of languages during the academic year. Usually, TAs are hired for Arabic, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. TAs play a unique and important role on campus and are a very valuable asset to the community.
Pre-arrival Information:
Teaching Assistants come to the United States on J-1 Exchange Visitor status as non-degree students. International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) assists TAs with obtaining J-1 visas and also provides advising, programs, services, and support to TAs as they navigate their part-student / part-staff role in the campus community.

In order to apply for a J-1 visa, you will need a DS-2019 Certificate of Eligibility form for Exchange Visitor Status. In order for Middlebury College to produce this DS-2019 form for you, you must first complete the DS2019 application form
Once you submit the DS-2019 application and supporting documents, ISSS will issue your DS-2019, which will allow you to apply for a J-1 visa. Please be aware that it can take several weeks to complete the visa application process, so you should submit the DS-2019 application to us as soon as possible.
ISSS also invites TAs to an orientation session prior to the beginning of classes to cover immigration issues related to maintaining your J-1 status and to connect you with the resources you need to perform your TA duties. Information on the ISSS orientation session will be sent to you along with your DS-2019.
Please note that ISSS does not handle the TA hiring process. If you are interested in applying for a TA position, please contact the Language Department directly.
Current Teaching Assistants:
As TAs, your challenging and rewarding “balancing act” involves juggling faculty, staff and student roles: you may be teaching in the classroom, preparing programming activities in your language house and engaging in your own coursework at the College as a student. We recognize your unique role and are here to support you as you balance these different hats on campus.
You can search the College handbook to find specific information about College policies, procedures, student and faculty conduct and other resources: http://www.middlebury.edu/about/handbook
Please contact ISSS to inquire about visa-related issues, travel, TA programming and excursions, campus resources for TAs, and to share your ideas about how this Web site and ISSS can help you as you navigate your self-described “hybrid” role as TA.
