Karl Lindholm

The Dean of Advising serves as an academic adviser to both students and faculty. His goal, broadly speaking, is to help ensure that academic advising at Middlebury works in practice as well as it does in theory. Consequently, he collaborates with the Director of the First-Year Seminar Program, Office of Learning Resources, the Registrar's Office, the Commons Deans, and the Dean of the College Office.

He is the adviser to many students, teaching a first-year seminar each year and taking on those first and second year students whose faculty advisers are on leave. He writes an Advising Guide For First Year Seminar Students & Faculty and a Advising Guide for Faculty called "What is a Good Adviser."  He makes formal presentations to new faculty and First-Year Seminar leaders, and communicates with students and parents about advising issues.

Dean Lindholm, a Middlebury graduate (1967), has a Ph.D. in American Studies and teaches in the Department of American Studies. His academic specialties are Vietnam War literature, New England culture, cross-cultural literature, and baseball and American culture.  His scholarship is largely in baseball's Negro leagues. He is working on a biography of William Clarence Matthews, a turn of the century black baseball player and political leader.

From 1976 to 1992, Dean Lindholm worked in the Dean of Students Office, serving as the Dean of Students from 1989-1992. He was Study Abroad Adviser from 1976 to 1995, and has directed the summer Pre-Enrollment Program and Winter Term off-campus study. From 1992 to 1999, he was the Commons Faculty Head of Atwater Commons; in 2000-2001, he served as the interim Faculty Head of Ross Commons, and in 2001-2002 and 2005-2006, he was in a similar role in Brainerd Commons.  In the fall semester of 2007, he served as Acting Dean in Wonnacott Commons, and this year, he is the Acting Dean of Cook Commons.

Dean Lindholm encourages students to meet with him to discuss their academic direction and performance. He holds open office hours Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons in the Dean's Office in Cook Commons (Battell North) and can be reached at (802) 443-3330 or by e-mail at lindholm@middlebury.edu
