Katy AbbottKaty Smith Abbott has taught in the department of the history of art and architecture at Middlebury since 1996. She received her B.A. from St. Olaf College in Minnesota and her M.A. and Ph.D. from Indiana University. Her field of expertise is Italian Renaissance painting, and she teaches courses on such topics as Venetian art and civic identity, early Italian panel painting, and High Renaissance art. Professor Abbott is currently researching a Renaissance panel painting that entered the collection of the Middlebury College Museum of Art in December 2005.

Since 2002, Professor Abbott has served, along with her husband Steve Abbott (department of mathematics), as co-head of Ross Commons. As heads of Ross Commons, the Abbotts have worked closely with myriad students, faculty, and staff to develop stimulating connections between the residential and the intellectual lives of students on campus.

In her capacity as associate dean, Katy works closely with the Commons heads to develop and implement academic programming within the Commons. She oversees the development of the Commons-based faculty/staff affiliate program, collaborates with the professional staff of the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Research on the Commons-based first-year seminar program, and will direct first-year orientation beginning in fall 2008.
