Explorations trips are designed to introduce students to some aspect of the broader Vermont cultural landscape. Many of the trips involve discussion with experts in the fields of focus, and most involve an opportunity to visit a number of fascinating sites outside of Middlebury.

The History and Ecology of Lake Champlain
Vermonters are preparing to celebrate (in 2009) the 400th anniversary of the discovery of Lake Champlain by Samuel de Champlain. From Champlain’s time to our own, the Lake has consistently served a vast range of peoples and needs. Visit the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum, the ECHO Center (where the ecology and biodiversity of the Lake are the focus), and other important sites, and get out on the lake in a canoe or kayak to experience first-hand what makes this our “great” lake. Organic Farming in Vermont What does it mean to practice organic farming, and why is it important to the Vermont agricultural landscape? Visit a range of local organic farmers and discover some answers to these questions. In addition to spending some time in Middlebury College’s own student-run organic garden, you may visit local vegetable farms, a cheese maker, an apiary, and a vineyard. This explorations trip will culminate in a lunch prepared by YOU using local ingredients.

Meditation
Explore meditation as a practice of developing intellectual clarity and deeper compassion for oneself and others. During this two-night meditation retreat, we will spend time in sitting meditation, walking meditation and complete an afternoon of “mindful work” wherein the mindfulness fostered in sitting meditation is extended into a daily activity. There will be presentations and discussions with the meditation instructor each evening.

Vermont’s Town Hall Theatres
Vermont has a long and fascinating history grounded in buildings that served communities on a number of levels. Take a walk back in time to see how these noble structures functioned as centers for entertainment as well as seats of city government. You will meet with theatre directors, as well as individuals engaged in recent renovation projects. Middlebury’s own Town Hall Theatre is scheduled to re-open in the summer of 2008, so you’ll be among the first to rediscover this architectural gem (and perhaps perform on its stage some day)!

Architecture and the Environment
Vermont is home to some of the country’s leading practitioners and applications of sustainable architecture. Spend three days at the Yestermorrow Design-Build School in the Mad River Valley, exploring the interrelated issues of design, community, landscape, and sustainability. Faculty from both Yestermorrow and Middlebury will give presentations, conduct studio workshops, and guide you through your own design-build mini-project. We will also tour several sustainably designed and built projects in the area.

Local Politics
All eyes are on the National election this year, but on this trip, you’ll get a chance to experience some of what makes Vermont’s local political scene so singular. The Governor of Vermont, Jim Douglas, is a Middlebury College graduate, and if possible, this trip will include a conversation with Governor Douglas and a chance to get his perspective on some of the major issues facing the state. In addition, you will meet state representatives and members of the town selectboard. As you become part of our local town community, as well as the college community, you’ll have the chance to dive in to a discussion of some of the “hot-button” issues under consideration right now.

The Music Scene in Vermont
If you are a musician, or someone who has an interest in a wide range of musical genres, this may be the trip for you! There is a strong tradition of folk music in Vermont, and you will certainly spend some time listening to and hearing from some local folk musicians. You will also meet with individuals around the state working with emerging artists and groups, and discuss what it means to begin a big career in a small state. Informal jam sessions are likely, so bring your instrument, including your well-tuned voice!

Bread Loaf: Middlebury’s Mountain
All Explorations trips will be based at Middlebury College’s Bread Loaf campus, which is nestled in the Green Mountains. On this trip, you will launch each day to explore a specific aspect of this idyllic spot. You may discover hidden ponds, try your hand at fly fishing in a nearby river, and do some gentle hiking to some of the most beautiful spots in Middlebury’s “backyard” mountain. Along the way, you will learn about some of the literary luminaries who spent time writing and teaching at Bread Loaf.

Alternative Energy: taking the next step
Take a human-powered and public transportation tour of some of Vermont’s most interesting renewable energy and sustainable enterprise projects. Whether visiting a “Cow Power” farm that generates electricity, meeting with individuals who manufacture wind testing hardware and software and produce residential wind turbines, or exploring Shelburne Farms, a 1,400 acre environmental education and sustainable agriculture center on the shores of Lake Champlain, you will discover many of the creative approaches Vermonters are taking to “leaving a small footprint.” See some of the most beautiful landscapes in Vermont, with plenty of time for tossing a Frisbee or taking a dip in an inviting lake or pond!

The Visual Arts in Middlebury and Beyond
Engage in discussions about the role of public art on campus, travel to nearby museums and galleries, and meet with local artists in their studios as you explore what makes Middlebury such a vibrant community for the arts. Spend time at the campus museum, and travel farther afield to discover the riches that we enjoy “down the road.” Throughout these experiences, be ready to address questions about the role of the arts in various kinds of communities, and consider what kinds of artistic ventures you would like to be a part of during your time at Middlebury.
