Dear New Transfer Student,

Congratulations on your acceptance as a transfer student to Middlebury! This year many students applied to Middlebury for only a small number of transfer spaces; you are among a very talented group of accepted students.

This September we expect to welcome seventeen new transfer students to campus. You are invited to arrive with the entering first-year students and we hope that you will participate fully in New Student Orientation. A small number of events are designed specifically for first-year students, and other events have been developed for transfer students. Although it is likely that you have already participated in a college orientation program, most of our events are designed to introduce students specifically to Middlebury College resources, practices and opportunities as well as those in our surrounding community. For this reason, I enclose here a copy of the booklet, “Preparing for Your Arrival.” Please note that the calendar printed in this booklet is in error; I have included a separate page with the corrected calendar.

You should plan to arrive on campus on campus on Tuesday, September 1, and should go directly to your Commons Welcome Center to pick up your room key, Orientation folder, and take care of other administrative tasks. In your Orientation folder, you will find a complete schedule for the Orientation program, with special events for transfer students noted. These events begin Tuesday night with an informal social event hosted by returning students.

There are several key events you can expect as you make the academic transition to Middlebury. First, you will be paired with an academic adviser in your expressed area of interest for an initial meeting and planning session. You may use this time to plan your Fall courses as well as begin plans for your future academic program and goals. Transfer credit you have earned from your previous institution will be available on your Middlebury record in time for this meeting. The time and place for your meeting will be included in your registration materials packet you receive when you arrive for orientation.

Next, you will have the opportunity to participate in an academic forum, a gathering of representatives from each Middlebury department, to ask questions about course offerings. Finally, you will attend a registration event for transfer students where you will officially register for your Fall classes. Details about each event time and location will be included in the registration packet information you receive at orientation check-in.

Attached to this letter is a sticker with your college i.d. number. I have provided this so that you can access your Middlebury College e-mail account. Information on activating your Bannerweb account and college e-mail can be found on the Orientation website, at http://www.middlebury.edu/NR/rdonlyres/30A73E9D-DF92-410A-A078-E89C1549595B/0/GetEmailNowMay2009.pdf

We look forward to meeting you and welcoming you to Middlebury. Best wishes for a relaxing summer.

Sincerely,

Katy Smith Abbott,
Associate Dean of the College
