Middlebury College's Eating Disorders Treatment Team was formed to promote a multi-disciplinary approach to supporting those with body image distortion and problematic eating patterns. The team is comprised of representatives from the counseling center, health center, the health and wellness education office, and athletic department.
Some of our activities include:
-
Determining campus needs for education and treatment services .
For example, the team was instrumental in identifying the need for
easy access to nutritionist services on campus. An arrangement was forged with a private-practitioner nutritionist to deliver services on campus.
-
Promoting educational programs highlighting awareness of eating disorders on campus and directing students to campus resources.
In the past year, the Health and Wellness Education Office brought several educational offerings to campus. The office also offered a support group for students with eating concerns. We have had ongoing dialogue with coaches on the subject of athletes with concerning eating behaviors.
-
Developing literature that promotes an awareness of eating disorders and its treatment .
Recent pamphlets that have been created are: “How to Help a Friend” and “Suggestions for Coaches”.
-
Working closely with the athletic department.
In the interest of fostering healthy, safe athletes, we have been working to implement an athletic department policy that would prohibit athletes with low energy availability from participating on sports teams. See http://www.middlebury.edu/athletics/sportsmed/low_energy/ for more details.
-
Team treatment consultation.
Eating disorders present a complex of issues that often benefit from a multi-disciplinary approach. For this reason we encourage students to take advantage of Treatment Team Consultation, so that treatment of health, nutritional, and mental health concerns can be coordinated.
It is our intention to provide easy access to services through any of our representative groups. To learn more about campus services and initiatives, contact any of the following:
