Instructions On How To Plan for a Pandemic Flu and College Evacuation

STEP 1:

The College would prepare to close and ask all students to execute a personal evacuation plan in the setting of a severe flu pandemic that warranted social distancing to prevent the spread of illness.  While it is likely that we would move to evacuation prior to the onset of illness here in Middlebury Vermont, other areas of the country might already be infected at the time evacuation is ordered.   Though the federal government has stated that it would not prevent inter-state travel, we can not presume that distant travel from campus on planes or trains would be available.  Therefore, when developing evacuation locations, we encourage you to read Planning F.A.Q.s and consider the following:

  1. Is my home or other intended primary location within driving distance to Middlebury?
  2. If not, is there a relative or friend I could stay with temporarily until I could get home, or to my other primary location?
  3. Do my intended locations also promote the concept of social distancing?
  4. What will I need to get to my locations and how can I make those arrangements?
  5. How will my plan change as my life circumstances or the events of the pandemic change, and how will these changes affect my plan?
  6. What will I need to bring with me, and how will this affect my transportation needs?
  7. How will I communicate with my family during an evacuation?
  8. How are my intended locations preparing for a flu pandemic?

STEP 2:

Write down your plan, including the locations and methods of transportation you will use to get there.

STEP 3:

Share and discuss your plan with your family and anyone you are relying on to make your plan effective.  For example, if your second location is your aunt’s house, let her know now that it is in your plan.

STEP 4:

Enter your plan on the Banner-web link for student planning data entry (under construction, to be posted by late August 2007).

STEP 5:

Periodically review your plan for accuracy and effectiveness (i.e. repeat STEP 1 – STEP 5).
