Rohypnol (Roofies) induces a sedative-hypnotic effect including muscle relaxation and amnesia. It has been linked with date rapes due to these properties and because it has a synergenic effect when mixed with alcohol. This can render a victim helpless and without clear memory of the assault. Rohypnol, particularly when mixed with alcohol or other central nervous system depressants, can also be fatal. It is addictive and withdrawal symptoms can include seizures.
GHB (Gamma-hydroxybutyrate) has been used for its euphoric and sedative effect. It has also been linked to date rape. GBH has also been abused for its anabolic effect by body builders and athletes. It is often referred to as "Liquid Ecstasy", "Scoop" or "Grievous Bodily Harm."
