Individual short-term and crisis counseling is available if you have been sexually assaulted. If you need to speak to a counselor after 5:00 p.m. or on a weekend, call the Health Center and the nurse on duty will contact a counselor for you.

Trained nurses, a physician, and a nurse practitioner are available to provide medical care, support, information on pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, and referrals. Emergency contraception options are also available.


Campus Security

If you have been raped, you are encouraged to report the incident to Campus Security. Campus Security is available to provide transportation to Porter Medical Center Emergency Room. By reporting the attack to Security, they can alert the campus and community that a rape has occurred. The warning will be general and will not specify your name or other identifying information. Reports of rape made to Campus Security will result in the notification of the rape incident to the Dean of Student Affairs, the Commons Dean and the Health Center. Reporting a rape to Security does not commit you to pursuing a judicial complaint.

The Commons Deans are available to support you by arranging extensions on academic assignments, reassessing course load and/or making changes in housing assignments, etc., when necessary and possible. Formal charges of rape may be filed with the Dean of Student Affairs. If you choose to file a formal complaint an investigation and hearing will be conducted and disciplinary action taken if the defendant is found guilty. You do not have to file a formal complaint in order to request help from the Deans.


Human Relations Officer

The Human Relations Officer is the official designated by the President of the College to receive and process complaints of harassment brought by Middlebury College faculty, staff, and students under the College's Anti-Harassment Policy. Any Middlebury College faculty, staff, or student who has reasonable cause to believe that harassment, including sexual harassment, as defined by the College's Anti-Harassment Policy, has occurred or is occurring, or who believes that she or he has been subjected to retaliation for having brought or supported a complaint of harassment, is encouraged to bring that information to the immediate attention of:

This hospital is available to provide medical treatment and to collect physical evidence. Having evidenced collected does not commit you to filing charges with the police. It will allow you to preserve evidence while you take time to decide if you want to report the rape and press charges.

Reporting the crime to the police is not a commitment to go to court. You can make that decision later. A report to the police includes making a detailed statement about what happened to you.
