The Arabic School moves to Mills College: Summer 2009
Language doesn’t exist in a vacuum. It is a means of personal expression, a conduit for new ideas, a medium for doing business, and a cultural foundation.
In the Arabic School, you will master not only vocabulary and syntactical structure, but how to use the language to engage effectively with Arab culture, both ancient and new. The focus will be on classical Arabic during your five daily classroom hours; in optional sessions, you can choose from a variety of Arabic dialects such as Moroccan, Egyptian, and Syrian. With connections to prominent universities across the globe, the Arabic School continues to draw from among the leading scholars of the Middle East, Africa, Europe, the United States, and Canada. The School’s faculty will support you at every step as you hone your linguistic skills and prepare to engage with Arab culture, no matter where in the world you find it.
Outside of the classroom, you will broaden these skills by participating in a wide array of daily, in-language cocurricular activities—including calligraphy, cooking, cinema, music, and the Quran. The Language Pledge will ensure that every moment, great or small, is an opportunity to learn and improve, whether you are discussing dinner options or attending a lecture from a visiting scholar or cultural commentator.
• Beginning in the summer of 2009, all students admitted to the Arabic School will study at our new second site at Mills College, in Oakland, California. Application and financial aid processes are identical to those for the Middlebury campus. For more information on Middlebury at Mills, please click here.
• Applicants to the Arabic School are also eligible to apply for the Kathryn Davis Fellowship for Peace, which covers tuition, room, board, and provides a stipend. Please click here for more information.
