Sharon Weiner

German School Faculty

Sharon Weiner is a Visiting Assistant Professor at Emory University, and has also taught at the University of Illinois at Chicago and DePaul University.  Her research examines questions of language and trauma from literary, philosophical and clinical perspectives, and her dissertation focused on the unsayable in works by Ingeborg Bachmann and other post-war Austrian authors.  A related grant-funded study employs qualitative interviews with psychologists to investigate the nature of unverbalized trauma in a clinical context.

Sharon received her Ph.D. in Germanic Studies from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2017, including a year of coursework at Humboldt University in Berlin.  She holds a BS in Science, Technology and Society from Stanford University, and Masters in Public Health and Urban Planning from Columbia University.  She has conducted qualitative research on the transformation of public housing in Chicago, field research on sustainable development in the Dominican Republic, and she has worked in both the public and private sectors on affordable housing and health issues.  Before returning to academia, Sharon spent a year traveling independently – admittedly not for professional purposes, but nonetheless strengthening her passion for language learning and intercultural exchange.

Sharon has received multiple awards for research and teaching including the UIC University Fellowship; the UIC Chancellor’s Fellowship for Interdisciplinary Research; and the Robert Kauf Teaching Award for Curriculum Development.  She is an enthusiastic instructor who enjoys teaching German language, literature, cinema, culture, and – for those who dare – yoga.
