Sharon Weiner

Faculty

Sharon Weiner is a doctoral candidate in Germanic Studies at the University of Illinois-Chicago, including a year in Berlin at Humboldt University.  She holds a BS in Science, Technology and Society from Stanford University, an MS in Urban Planning from Columbia University, and an MPH from Columbia University.  She has worked in the private sector on affordable housing and in the public sector on early childhood health. 

Sharon's current research interests center on modern Austrian literature and philosophy of language.  Her dissertation examines questions of language and trauma in works by post-war Austrian authors, particularly Ingeborg Bachmann.  In a related study, she conducts qualitative interviews with psychologists to investigate effects of trauma that remains unverbalized. 

Sharon is a winner of the UIC Chancellor’s Fellowship for Interdisciplinary Research, the UIC Robert Kauf Memorial Award for Graduate Research, and the UIC Robert Kauf Teaching Award for Curriculum Development.  Her teaching experience includes yoga, German cinema, and beginning and intermediate German language.

GRMN 3195 - Early Inter German for Singers      

The successful completion of this course corresponds to the equivalent of second and third semester German. The active use of all major points of basic grammar and vocabulary is stressed in order to bring students to a common working level in the four skills. During the second half, a greater emphasis will be placed on the development of writing skills and reading strategies with appropriate cultural and literary texts. Audio-visual materials supplement the four hours of daily classroom instruction. Extra listening comprehension exercises and videos will be completed outside of the classroom and pronunciation work will be provided in a course meeting several times a week.
