Studied German language and literature, history, and philosophy at the universities of Tübingen, Münster, and Berlin. First State Examination (1. Staatsexamen) in 1971. Research assistant for the department of German Language and Literature at the Free University of Berlin. Completed doctorate in 1977. 1978–1995: following the second State Examination (2. Staatsexamen), tenured teacher (Studienrätin) and later director of studies at the Fichtenberg-Oberschule in Berlin-Steglitz. Completed habilitation in 1993. 1995–1997: temporary professorship at the Free University of Berlin. 1997–2004: University professor at the department of German Language and Literature at the Georg-August University of Göttingen. From October 1, 2004, until October 1, 2012 university professor at the Institute for German and Dutch Language and Literature at the Free University of Berlin.
