Anna Cox ’21, a chemistry major, describes her summer research to Professor Rick Bunt at the 2019 Summer Symposium for undergraduate research.

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – On a warm July afternoon, dozens of student researchers and faculty mentors filled the Great Hall at Bicentennial Hall, chatting with visitors and explaining some of the complex ideas presented on their large posters. The annual Summer Research Symposium gathered all the students who have been toiling with their faculty mentors since late spring for a chance to share their work with the wider community.

This summer, approximately 130 students stayed in Middlebury to work with faculty on research. They averaged 37 hours per week, together logging more than 47,000 hours over the course of the summer.

Their assignments varied depending on their areas of interest. Some had been conducting field research—collecting cyanobacteria samples on Lake Champlain aboard the College’s research vessel, for example—while others were running lab experiments and analyzing data back on campus. The undergraduate researchers represented 19 different academic disciplines in the sciences, arts, and humanities.
