Planning at Middlebury

One function of the Office of Planning and Assessment is to develop and implement planning principles for the College, and to promote the use of information in planning and strategic decision making.  We work to facilitate and coordinate planning efforts within and across the College’s programs and evaluate our success in implementing those plans.

In recent years, the College has undertaken numerous planning efforts.  In 2006, the Strategic Planning Committee, working with numerous task forces and with the consultation of many individuals across campus, produced a comprehensive strategic plan for the institution, Knowledge Without Boundaries.  That plan included numerous recommendations, and swift progress was made in addressing those recommendations.

In 2008, President Liebowitz responded to the economic crisis by appointing a Budget Oversight Committee and charged them with identifying a plan for addressing budget shortfalls.  These efforts resulted in a balanced budget and a reduced staff, achieved entirely without layoffs.  Information about the College’s response to this challenge is provided here

Most recently, in 2011, a comprehensive self study of the institution was conducted for the College’s reaccreditation review.  This report included descriptions and evaluations of all of the College’s programs, and included plans for enhancing and improving the education we provide.  The process culminated in notification from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges of the College’s continued accreditation.
