Middlebury’s Office of General Counsel is responsible for addressing legal issues arising out of the activities of Middlebury.

As Middlebury’s chief legal officer, Hannah Ross is responsible for addressing legal issues arising out of the activities of Middlebury, which includes the undergraduate College, the Institute, Language Schools, Schools Abroad, School of the Environment, Bread Loaf School of English, and Bread Loaf Writers’ Conferences. Hannah also serves on President Patton’s Senior Leadership Group.

What We Do

The General Counsel (GC) is charged with overseeing and partnering with all outside counsel retained on behalf of Middlebury for a variety of purposes, including for advice regarding the laws applicable to Middlebury’s operations, to solve legal problems and facilitate transactions, and to provide timely and thoughtful advice and resources covering a broad range of legal issues that help Middlebury, its faculty, and its staff fulfill their missions and meet their goals.
