Sunday morning network maintenance

Thu, 02/14/2013 - 10:01am

The following essential network maintenance activity is planned for this Sunday morning that will result in extended service interruptions throughout the campus.

Between  6:30 and 7:15 am the network core’s components will be upgraded.  While all of the components of the network core are redundant, not all parts of the network throughout the campus have a path back to both sides of the network core.  As a result there will be a 20 – 30 minute network service interruption for the majority of buildings on campus.

Between 7:00 and 8:15 am critical network aggregation switches that connect campus buildings and server farms to the network core will be upgraded.  This will result in a complete interruption of network connectivity of approximately 30 minutes throughout the campus.  This includes access to the College’s primary web sites, Email, MiddFiles – all systems hosted at Middlebury.

Between 7:45 and 9:00 am our border gateway routers and other components that connect the network core with the Internet will be upgraded.  We expect four 3-5 minute periods where Internet routing will be in flux and expect transient loss of Internet connectivity for the Middlebury campus.  During these four 3-5 minute periods, the VPNs with MIIS and Ellucian may be interrupted briefly, this would impact reaching Banner SSB and INB.

These network upgrades are essential and must be completed in a timely manner.  We appreciate your patience as we strive to keep our network operating optimally.

Wiley Online Library down

Tue, 02/12/2013 - 2:15pm

The Wiley Online Library is non-functional for us and for other libraries around the country. There has not been any official notification from Wiley, so I cannot predict when access will be restored. When I know more, I will add an update in a comment to this post.

Infrastructure Maintenance for Moodle and Measure

During the maintenance period internet connectivity may be briefly disrupted several times on February 16th from 1:00 am EST to 6:00 am EST.

The new upgrades and security features will provide additional hosting security for clients.  Ultimately, we believe that you will be pleased with the security updates, and we ask in advance that you accept our apologies for any inconvenience you may experience. We welcome your feedback on our efforts to continue to provide quality customer service and we request that you direct any questions and concerns related to this scheduled maintenance to Remote-Learner’s support division.

Phishing on campus!

Thu, 01/17/2013 - 3:43pm

Over the last week Middlebury experienced a dramatic increase in the number of successful phishing attacks that resulted in Middlebury user accounts being compromised. A phishing attack is the effort of maliciously using email or a web site to try to unwittingly gain information about another individual. These recent attacks resulted in two distinct outcomes. The first was that many of these accounts were leveraged to generate large amounts of spam. The second result from these compromised accounts is that the attackers attempted to connect to the Middlebury network with the exposed user’s credentials.

This past week many individuals across our campus received an email that looked similar to the one below:

————————————–

Message with “Middlebury” as the display name

Dear Member,

You Have 1 New Message

Sincerely,
Middlebury Webmail Service

————————————

The link in this message redirected people to copy of the Middlebury CAS Logon page. Two important things to know about email from Middlebury IT Services. First, Library and Information Services will never ask for your user credentials in an email. Second, if you find yourself on any web page that is asking for credentials, always verify the address in your web browser’s address bar, to ensure that the web page is where you really want to be. Just because a web page has the Middlebury logo does not mean it is always a Middlebury web site.

To protect against phishing remember the following rules:

  1. Never click on any links in a suspicious email.
  2. If you ever receive an unsolicited email  and you do not recognize the sender delete the message.
  3. If you receive an email that requests your credentials or asks you to click a link which takes you to a web site that requests your credentials, do not click the link but rather go to the web site through the institution home page, Middlebury.edu for example.
  4. If you suspect an email is fraudulent delete the message.
  5. If you ever have questions regarding phishing or the content of an email call the Helpdesk.

The Helpdesk will help you determine if the email is legitimate. Please do NOT click on any links in a suspect email message.

If you suspect that you may have recently provided your Middlebury credentials to a fraudulent web site or email address, you should immediately reset your password at go/activate and then contact the Helpdesk.

If you become aware that your Middlebury account has been disabled, you must contact the Helpdesk to resolve.

More information is available at the Middlebury College Information Security web site at go/infoSec or contact the InfoSec office at infosec@middlebury.edu.

Another E-mail system upgrade?

No!  The e-mail message many received this afternoon with the subject line "Your Middlebury.edu E-mail Account Notification!" was the latest "phishing" attack directed at our systems.  We will NEVER ask you for your password, and NEVER will send passwords via email.  Thank you for those who have reported this message - and thank you for not responding.

August 16, 2010

Exchange Server mailbox migrations are ongoing, with a large percentage of faculty, staff and student accounts completed for the Middlebury campus.  The mailbox moves will continue until completed.

In addition to notes below, those who have successfully upgraded to Entourage version 13 may need to update server settings.

August 13, 2010 - 10pm

Exchange Server 2010 mailbox migration has begun:

  • Mailboxes will be unavailable briefly at the time they are moved - if yours is unavailable, try again later
  • WebMail, Outlook, Blackberry should not be affected
  • Entourage - must be upgraded to version 13 to synchronize with Exchange server settings - http://go.middlebury.edu/ent_v13 for faculty, staff & students on campus only
  • Other portable devices - ActiveSync (including Apple iOS and Android OS portable devices) - setting changes may be required - http://go.middlebury.edu/activesync_config
  • IMAP/POP email settings - https://mediawiki.middlebury.edu/wiki/LIS/POP,_IMAP,_SMTP_Clients
addendum August 17, 2010 - for any email program not set up as an Exchange (or ActiveSync) client -- settings for email server switch back from "junglecat.middlebury.edu" to "mail.middlebury.edu"

Stay tuned here for more updates

July 27, 2010
Exchange Server 2010 mailbox migration update:
Entourage update to version 13 must be completed before August 14th weekend to prevent interruption of service.  Instructions are available here.
Additional Recommendations:

1)       If you have created folders in Entourage recently, check Outlook Web Access (aka. WebMail - http://go.middlebury.edu/mail) to see if they exist in your mailbox on the Exchange email server.  Newly-created folders in some versions of Entourage may not be synchronizing properly with the Exchange server.  This does not result in lost email, but may cause confusion.  Folders may be dragged to the desktop, then dragged back into Entourage after the upgrade to version 13, if you find folders that are listed in Entourage that cannot be seen in Outlook Web Access.

2)       Entourage 13 update from version 12.2.5 – several have reported errors running the standalone update to version 13 from 12.2.5.  Running the full Office 2008 installer is the simple solution. (only if on campus & for computers covered by our Microsoft licensing - contact the helpdesk for clarification)

July 13, 2010

A Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 mailbox migration is tentatively planned for the weekend of August 14th, 2010.  Plans are for an all-campus message to be sent with details of this service change, and likely impacts.  A known issue requires that Microsoft Entourage customers be updated to Entourage version 13 before the mailbox migration is complete.  As this is tentative, no action is currently required. The Entourage 13 upgrade steps available  are recommended for computers owned by Middlebury College regardless of the status of the system upgrade.  Videos of the upgrade process are also available here.  Android and Apple iOS (iPod Touch, iPad, iPhone) devices that had email settings adjusted since May 20th may need reconfiguration again for their mail applications to work after the mailbox migration is complete.  The mail server settings will revert to "mail.middlebury.edu" in place of "junglecat.middlebury.edu" at that time.  For more information, click here.
