Software for College-Owned Computers

The following software is available for installation on some College-owned computers (see the licensing info for each entry for more detail).  We are moving toward self-service installation of commonly requested software that can be done at your convenience. If the software you want is not available in self service, please submit a ticket to request it.

We also have an explanation of the levels of support we offer for different titles. In many cases, there is training available through our lynda online learning subscription.

SensusAccess

A web-based, self-service application that allows users to automatically convert documents into a range of alternate and accessible formats.

Access

A Microsoft database management system used by software developers and data architects to develop application software. "Power users" can use it to build software applications.

Filemaker Pro

A database program that allows the creation of data entry forms, viewing and maintenance of data, as well as report creation.

AutoCAD

AutoDesk makes their computer-aided design (CAD) software available free of charge for educational users with an individual account. It cannot be installed by ITS.

GIS
ArcGIS

Manage, analyze, and display geographic information.

QGIS

A cross-platform, free, and open-source desktop geographic information system (GIS) application that provides data viewing, editing, and analysis.

Apple Mail is the default email client that comes with every Mac using OS X 10.0 or later. Integrates with Calendar and Contacts.

Outlook

Microsoft's email software used to manage email, calendars, and tasks.

Pages

Pages is a word processor developed by Apple. It is part of the iWork productivity suite and runs on the OS X and iOS operating systems.

Powerpoint

Microsoft's presentation software used to create presentations using slides that can incorporate charts, images, and audio/video.

Publisher

Publisher is Microsoft's entry-level desktop publishing application.  Adobe Indesign is the supported alternative at Middlebury as it is available for both Macs and PCs and provides a robust export feature.

Word

Word is Microsoft's word processing program used to create, edit, and save documents.

Operating System

Important note:  The Technology Helpdesk will not install nor troubleshoot older operating systems (such as Windows XP and Mac OS 10.9 - Mavericks) that are no longer supported by the vendor and thus cannot be patched for vulnerabilities.  See Levels of Support for more information.

Linux

Linux is the best-known and most-used open source operating system.

Windows 7

Windows 7 is an operating system released by Microsoft on October 22, 2009.  It is no longer being installed or re-installed; Windows 10 is the recommended operating system.  (Note: Microsoft's support of Windows 7 ends January 2020.)

R

R is a language and environment for statistical computing and graphics. One of R’s strengths is the ease with which well-designed publication-quality plots can be produced, including mathematical symbols and formulae where needed.

IBM SPSS Statistics is an integrated family of products that addresses the entire analytical process, from planning to data collection to analysis, reporting and deployment.

Stata

Stata is a complete, integrated statistical software package that provides everything you need for data analysis, data management, and graphics.

Final Cut Pro

Video editing software that we are phasing out.  Premiere is cross platform and more widely used.

Quicktime Player for Windows

Quicktime is a multimedia development, storage, and playback technology from Apple that allows you to combine sound, text, animation, and video in a single file.  The Windows version of this software contains vulnerabilities and is potentially harmful.   The VLC program has been identified as a proper alternative.

VLC Media Player

Web Browser
Chrome

Chrome is a freeware web browser developed by Google and is used to browse web sites on the internet. Non-preferred due to issues with Webmail and other Middlebury services.

Firefox

Firefox is a free, open source Web browser based on the Mozilla code base and offers many customization options and features.

Internet Explorer (IE)

Used to browse web sites on the internet and required to work with certain administrative systems. It is the last version of the Internet Explorer web browser by Microsoft and was released November 7, 2013 for Windows 7.

Safari

Safari is a web browser developed by Apple and is used to browse web sites on the internet.

Web Publishing
Adobe Dreamweaver

A development tool used to create, publish, and manage websites and mobile content. This software is used infrequently at Middlebury and only for specific types of non-Drupal websites.  (Drupal and WordPress are the most common choices for website management as they are easier to use.)

Free, open source software that can be used to easily create and manage many types of websites. Most of Middlebury's websites are created and maintained using Drupal.
