Hospital Civil de Guadalajara
The two Hospitales Civiles (Nuevo and Viejo) are public hospitals in Guadalajara associated with the Universidad de Guadalajara. Because they are teaching hospitals there are a number of medical students doing their rotations in the Hospital Civil. Middlebury students may participate in rotations based on their interest and previous experience.
Note from Della: Students wishing to intern in the Hospital Civil should have a pre-med background and a clear idea of what they want to learn and in which department. Students accepted for internships at the Hospital Civil may need to combine their internship with another. Internships at other hospitals in Guadalajara may be possible.
Statements from past students:
“I also had the opportunity to go to the big public hospital in Guadalajara el Hospital Civil Viejo where I followed a group of medical students through the different services week by week. I spent one week in Pediatrics, one in surgery, one in ObGyn, one in emergency care, and one in infectious disease. It was a very difficult experience to be confronted with serious illness every morning, but it gave me an amazing preview of what my future career will entail, a point of comparison, and a sharp look at what inequities I must work to rectify. It also allowed me to connect with the other medical students, some of the best friends I made in Guadalajara.”
