Updated for 2016-2017 Housing Process
Middlebury is a residential college and requires full-time students to live on campus while they are enrolled. Therefore students are guaranteed housing for four years at Middlebury. However, the College does provide the option for a limited number of Senior students to apply to live off campus. In order to provide a fair approach for approving students to live off campus a lottery is conducted in the spring for the following Fall Term; a second lottery in the fall for students hoping to begin off campus living in a Winter/Spring Term may be offered but is not guaranteed. Students may apply as individuals or in groups of up to eight. Students with official college discipline may not apply to live off campus or be included in an off campus group application.
Please note that as there is a lottery process, applications are not guaranteed to be approved. Students should not make any off campus housing arrangements, or sign a lease until they have received final approval from the College. Making premature arrangements does not ensure approval. Students approved to live off-campus receive a fee reduction for living, and if they choose, eating off campus.
Students approved for off campus living must make their own housing arrangements and are required to provide details on where they are living and who owns the property.
It is a violation of College policy for students to reside off campus without prior approval. Applicants must be free from official college discipline.
Superblock, Social and Interest House House Members
Students who have committed to filling a bed in a campus housing unit, i.e. Social House, Interest House or SuperBlock, are only eligible for off campus living if other students have previously been identified to fill their spot on the roster by the stipulated deadline.
- Eligible students receive an email from Residential Systems Coordinator (RSC) Karin Hall-Kolts, outlining the process for an upcoming lottery.
- Students are approved for an academic year. Students approved for Spring Term off campus housing must notify the RSC by the posted deadline whether they wish to continue living off campus or return to on-campus housing in the following fall.
- Students who plan to continue living off campus are required to submit a new commitment form via email to the RSC by the posted deadline to solidify their spot on the roster.
- All inquires about meal plan fee reductions must be submitted directly to the Dining Director, Dan Detora. to facilitate the process please copy RSC Karin Hall-Kolts on those messages.
There is a lottery held in the Spring Term for (full-time) students wishing to apply for off campus beginning in the subsequent Fall Term. The College is currently not planning to extend any 2017 Spring Term offers.
Dates for the Spring 2016 lottery process for new Fall Term applicants are as follows:
- Renewals Forms from Spring Term: February 14
- Application Available: January 22
- Application Deadline: February 5
- Lottery: February 16, 4:00 p.m. - Crossroads
Students who have received final approval for Special Student status are required to live off campus and are not a part of the lottery. Students who are planning to be Special Students but have not yet received final approval are encouraged to participate in the lottery process.
All students approved to live off campus are required to complete and submit an Off-Campus Housing Contract and a Fee Reduction form. All Off-Campus students are required to provide landlord contact information to the RSC as well as their local off campus housing location and phone number. They are also obligated to enter and update their address and phone information in SSB as needed. This is as much for security concerns, as it is to maintain lines of communication between students and the College. Students who fail to do so may be required to move back into on-campus housing. Students will be held accountable for policy violations that take place between the time they first arrive on campus to begin their Middlebury program and their graduation, or the College's confirmation of their withdrawal. Conduct that takes place on or near Middlebury College premises or property; occurs at or in connection with a Middlebury College-related event; or occurs off-campus but adversely affects or could reasonably be expected to adversely affect the Middlebury College community and/or the pursuit of its objectives, is subject to the College disciplinary process. Therefore, Middlebury College policy will be enforced when the actions of students residing off-campus or the actions of their guests prompt a community member to contact the College or a law enforcement agent or Middlebury College Public Safety to respond to the residence as a follow up to a complaint or after observing illegal activity.
Housing Fee Reductions
Full-time, Off Campus students receive a fee reduction for their housing which is applied automatically when a student is approved to live off campus. Fee reduction rates are newly established each year. The reduction is applied directly to a student's college bill. Dining Fee Reduction
As a significant number of students who live off campus continue to eat in the dining halls, the dining fee reduction must be applied for separately. Information about the application process and form are available through Dining Services. 802.443.5244.
