At the Center for Community Engagement we want to help all students find the right opportunities for them. To learn about existing programs, click on a category name below to view a list of some of our incredible community partners.

Many Student Service Organizations already work with these community partners and can help facilitate your involvement. If you have questions or would like help getting started, please email us us or stop by our office at 20 Old Chapel Rd. 


ECOLOGIA's programs bring international perspectives to local sustainable development projects, and bring locally based "on the ground" experience back to the world of international decision making.

Middlebury Alternative Break Trips (MAlt)
Each February Break the MAlt student organization sends domestic and international trips to conduct service projects designed to assist community members and local organizations dealing with a wide range of projects and issues. 

Vermont Institute on the Caribbean
VIC is a non-profit, non-governmental organization that works with communities in the Caribbean to build collaborative partnerships that nurture self-sufficiency and local empowerment.

Vermont Refugee Resettlement Project
VRRP acts to defend human rights, promote self-sufficiency and education, and forge community partnerships through a full range of services and programs.

Art & Historic Preservation

Art on Main
Art on Main is a nonprofit community arts center and cooperative gallery committed to advancing the arts and building a vibrant arts community.

Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History
The Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History is a nonprofit, local history museum exhibiting Vermont furniture, portraits, household objects, and other artifacts.

Middlebury Studio School
Middlebury Studio School's mission is to promote the creative process and community through art and craft education for people of all ages and abilities. 

Rokeby Museum
The Rokeby Museum preserves and interprets the landscape, buildings, and collections of this remarkable family. Rokeby is one of the nation's best-documented Underground Railroad sites.

Health Services

Addison County Court Diversion and Community Justice Projects, Inc.
Court Diversion is seeking thoughtful, nonjudgmental, dedicated volunteers to give 2 hours a month to meet with offenders in a community-based response to crime.

American Cancer Society Relay for Life
Relay for Life is an overnight event designed to raise money for cancer research and programs through the American Cancer Society. Join the Middlebury Relay team.

Butch's Team
Butch's Team seeks volunteers to spend time with long-time College friend, Butch Varno, a community member with cerebral palsy. There are also some opportunities to help Butch with exercise to reinforce his physical therapy work. 

Champlain Valley Agency on Aging (CVAA)
CVAA serves people 60 and over in Addison, Chittenden, Franklin, and Grand Isle counties, helping them age with independence and dignity.

Foundation for Alcoholism Research (FAR)
FAR's mission is to raise and distribute funds to perform research in the following areas: causes, identification, detection, prevention, treatment, and cure of/for alcoholism.

Helen Porter Health Care and Rehabilitation Center
HPHCRC Offers sub-acute services and dementia care as well as traditional long-term care and is looking for volunteers for one-on-one visits with residents as well as group recreational activities and special events.

Hospice Volunteer Services
Hospice Volunteer Services is a not-for-profit agency committed to offering care and support to our community members and their families who are facing the end of life or grieving the loss of a loved one.

Living Well, A Community Care Home
Living Well is a non-profit educational and charitable organization committed to enhancing the lives of individuals, families, and communities.

Middlebury Fire Department
The Middlebury Fire Department is a paid and volunteer on-call fire department consisting of 40+ members operating out of two stations and answering approximately 180 calls per year.

Middlebury Regional Emergency & Medical Services
MREMS provides both emergency and non-emergency care and transportation as well as vehicle extrication services.

Open Door Clinic/Community Health Services of Addison County
The Clinic provides free health care for adults who are uninsured or underinsured and meet the financial guidelines.

Project Independence Elderly Services
Project Independence provides daytime care for frail elders and respite and peace of mind for their families.

Prevent Child Abuse Vermont
The mission of PCAV is to promote and support healthy relationships between children and the people who care for them in order to eliminate child abuse.

Speak Up! Addison County
Speak Up! Addison County is a self-advocacy organization developed and operated by people with developmental disabilities.

Special Olympics
Special Olympics Vermont provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with cognitive disabilities.

Turning Point Center of Addison County
The Turning Point Center helps people find, maintain, and enhance their recovery experience through peer support, sober recreation, and educational opportunities. People with addictions take many pathways to recovery, and we respect and honor any path that helps an individual live a happy and productive life. We welcome anyone who is compassionate and caring and wants to work with people in recovery. 

WomenSafe is a nonprofit domestic and sexual violence victim advocacy organization and a member of the Vermont Network Against Domestic and Sexual Violence. Services provided include a 24-hour hotline, legal, medical, and community services, advocacy, support groups, supervised visitation, safe homes, education, and outreach to community, college, and youth groups.

Poverty Alleviation: Housing and Hunger

Addison County Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity (CVOEO)

The national and state-designated antipoverty agency for Addison county, CVOEO, supports low- and moderate-income people with programs developed in response to local needs.

Addison County Community Trust (ACCT)

ACCT's mission is to provide affordable housing to people of low to moderate income; the non-profit currently owns and operates over 600 units of permanently affordable housing.

Charter House Coalition
The Coalition is a volunteer-based, community-supported service organization that provides shelter, transitional housing, free meals, and communal spaces to families and individuals in the Middlebury area.

HOPE (Helping Overcome Poverty's Effects)
HOPE seeks to eliminate poverty and empower all people in Addison County to participate actively in a just community. They run the largest food shelf in Addison county, the Retroworks thrift store, and provide numerous poverty-relief services to members of Addison county.

John Graham Housing & Services
The John Graham Housing & Services serves individuals and families by offering short-term emergency shelter, casework, and referrals to other agencies.

Middlebury Area Summer Lunch & Recreation Support Group
The program's mission is to ensure that Middlebury-area children at risk of hunger during the summer months have access to nutritious meals and safely supervised, enriching activities.

Middlebury College Habitat for Humanity (HfH)
HfH seeks to address the need of simple, decent, affordable housing by working on the local building site and fundraising for the local Addison County chapter.

Vermont 2-1-1
Vermont 2-1-1 provides free and confidential 24/7 person-to-person service and is a local call from anywhere in Vermont.

Vermont Foodbank
The purpose of the Vermont Foodbank is to end hunger in Vermont by ensuring that everyone has access to enough quality food essential to their nutritional health.

Bridport Community Supper                                                                                     Bridport Community Supper seeks volunteers to host free meals for the Bridport community every Friday night during the coldest months (roughly November through April). Each week, 4-6 volunteers plan, prepare, and share meals. 

Community Development

ACLU-VT (American Civil Liberties Union of Vermont)
The ACLU-VT is a private nonprofit organization dedicated to the defense of individual rights guaranteed by the Bill of Rights and the Vermont Constitution.

Addison County Chamber of Commerce
The Chamber of Commerce needs assistance with researching bills during the legislative session and mailing and distributing its monthly newsletter.

Addison County Regional Planning Commission
The ACRPC seeks to provide a forum for towns to discuss and resolve mutual concerns, provide assistance to towns with the planning process and information, and develop a regional plan for the county.

Addison County Transit Resources
ACTR's mission is to enhance the economic, social, and environmental health of the region by providing public transportation services that are safe, reliable, accessible, and affordable for everyone.

League of Women Voters
The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization that encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.

Lions Club International/Middlebury Lions Club
Lions Clubs International is the world's largest service organization, focusing on voluntary services through community involvement and international cooperation. Get involved locally with the Middlebury Lions Club.

Neat Repeats
Neat Repeats is a downtown clothing shop whose proceeds benefit family and individual needs as well as helping other nonprofit organizations. 

Rotary Club of Middlebury
Rotary is an organization of business and professional leaders united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.

Round Robin Upscale Resale Shop
Round Robin is a resale shop with great clothing and housewares—all profits benefit Porter Medical Center. 

Pride Center of Vermont
The Community Center addresses the social, cultural, educational, health, and safety needs of Vermont's LGBTQ and allied community.

United Way of Addison County
United Way's mission is to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of Addison County through volunteering and fund raising.

Vermont Businesses for Social Responsibility
VBSR is a statewide trade organization of 550 businesses dedicated to encouraging socially responsible business practices.

Education, Mentoring, and Children's Programs

ACT (Addison Central Teens)
ACT's mission is to provide safe and fun activities and a place for the teens (sixth grade through high school) of the Addison Central Supervisory Union area.

Addison County Parent/Child Center
The Parent/Child Center is looking for volunteers to help with child care, kitchen work/baking, carpentry, yard work, office work/data entry, chaperones for teen events, and mentors and tutors for teens.

Boys & Girls Club of Greater Vergennes
The Boys & Girls Club provides recreation and social development programming after school and during summers to young people between the ages of 6 and 18.

Community Friends
Community Friends matches college mentors with children ages 6 to 12 living in Addison County. The goals are to give children an opportunity to get out and explore the community and the Middlebury College campus, and to provide support to children who are having difficulties. College mentor application here.

DREAM is a mentoring organization that partners Vermont college students with kids in low-income housing communities. Get involved with Middlebury DREAM

Foxcroft Farm-Harvest Program
Foxcroft's mission is to strengthen students' academic and social skills, enhance their self-confidence, and to instill a sense of community responsibility through an innovative curriculum that integrates agriculture and service learning with educational objectives. 

"The Hub" Teen Center
The Hub is a nonprofit teen center and skatepark in Bristol, VT serving youth up to age 19 with the mission of providing a safe, supervised, substance-free environment when school in not in session.

Ilsley Public Library
Ilsley provides current literature, information resources, information technology, and materials for lifelong learning. It also serves as a community center.

Mary Johnson Children's Center
The Center strives to meet the needs of working parents and families who use the Center and who represent the economic and cultural diversity of the community.

Middlebury Amateur Hockey Association (MAHA)
MAHA is an area youth hockey league for children ranging in ages from 3 to 18. We offer hockey instruction (teams) to boys and girls along with a learn-to-skate program for beginners.

Middlebury Parks & Recreation Department
The Middlebury Parks & Recreation Department provides recreational opportunities for residents of Middlebury and the surrounding communities.

Otter Creek Child Center
The mission of the Otter Creek Child Center is to provide high-quality, affordable care and education for young children.

Page 1 Literacy Project
Page 1 volunteers work as reading buddies, run after-school programs in elementary schools, and organize events to promote a love of reading throughout Addison County. 

The mission of the Sister-to-Sister program is to encourage middle school girls in Addison County to achieve their fullest potential. It is a yearlong program that brings together Addison County middle school girls and Middlebury College student mentors. 

Vermont Adult Learning (VAL)/VAL Childcare Center
Vermont Adult Learning's mission is to provide adults with essential skills education to further their educational, employment, and personal goals in order to expand their options and capabilities in the family, community, and workplace.  

Specific School Needs

Listed below are a selection of Addison County Schools seeking Middlebury College student volunteers. Please contact Megan Brakeley by email or phone at 802.443.3010 if you are interested in volunteering in a local school.

Beeman Elementary School
Beeman's mission is to ensure that each student possesses knowledge, personal skills, academic readiness, character, and work ethic to create a successful and responsible life. Beeman needs mentors to meet with individual students once a week for an hour.

Bridge School, Inc.
Bridge School is a nonprofit, private elementary school serving children in kindergarten through sixth grade. Each child is valued for her/his learning style and individualism; groups are formed on the basis of ability or interest, not grade level.

Hannaford Career Center
Hannaford is a career and technical center affiliated with three public high schools in Addison County. 

Middlebury Union High School (MUHS)
MUHS is a 9 - 12 public high school located about a 20-minute walk from campus. They regularly need patient, flexible volunteers to work as tutors in their Learning Lab, an alternative resource for students in need of academic enrichment. Volunteering at MUHS would be a great experience for those considering work in a high school setting.

Monkton Central School
Monkton Central School is a kindergarten through sixth grade elementary school located about eight miles north of Middlebury. The world language teaching program is a valuable component of the academic curriculum.

Mount Abraham Middle/High School
Mt. Abraham Middle/High School is a public middle and high school 11 miles from Middlebury.

Northbranch School
The North Branch School is an independent school for 7th through 9th grades, located nine miles from Middlebury. 

Quarry Hill School
Quarry Hill School is committed to providing a safe environment conducive to learning, cooperation, creative self-expression, personal responsibility, mutual respect, teamwork, and community involvement for preschool and school-age children.

Red Cedar School
The mission of the Red Cedar School is to support young people in discovering their interests, strengths, and goals so that they can develop a strong sense of personal initiative and engagement with learning and the world.

Ripton Elementary School
The Ripton School is a caring community and a safe learning environment with the goals of learning, growing, and becoming good citizens.

Weybridge Elementary School
Weybridge Elementary is a small public school serving children of rural farm, college, and business families, serving a kindergarten through sixth grade population of approximately 80 pupils.

Outdoor Recreation, Land Conservation, and Animal Care

Addison County Humane Society
The Addison County Humane Society, a no-kill shelter, takes in strays and unwanted animals and places them with new families, educates the community about issues important to the welfare of animals, and facilitates the process of investigating animal cruelty in our county.

Eddy Farm School for Riders and Horses
Eddy is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to teach traditional horsemanship skills and promote amateur athletic competition for everyone in our community, regardless of age or physical ability.

Good Point Recycling
Good Point Recycling promotes social responsibility and innovation in electronics recycling.

Middlebury Area Land Trust (MALT)
The Middlebury Area Land Trust conserves, promotes, and manages land as natural, open, and working landscapes in Addison County.

Moosalamoo Association
One of the missions of the Moosalamoo Association is to collaborate with public entities to plan, manage, and provide stewardship for wildlife habitat conservation and quality public recreation opportunities and facilities.

Nature Conservancy
The Nature Conservancy is a science-based, non-profit conservation organization whose mission is to conserve the lands and waters on which all life depends.

Spirit in Nature Trail
Spirit in Nature is a place of interconnecting paths where people of diverse spiritual traditions may walk, worship, meet, meditate, and promote education and action toward better stewardship of this sacred earth.

Willowell Foundation
By creating connections between arts, education and the environment, Willowell seeks to find balance in the intersection of human and natural communities.
