We will offer optional orientation trips for incoming Febs. There are February outdoor orientation trips (FOO!) and Community Engagement trips. Our goal is to provide an intimate small group experience in which new students get to know one another, and their upper-class leaders. This setting provides a unique opportunity to share questions, concerns, and hopes about transitioning to life at Middlebury with those best able to relate - other students! Not surprisingly, tight-knit groups sharing a special bond often develop over the course of the program. The program cost of $75 covers your food, transportation and lodging. Scholarships are available for those who would like to participate but cannot cover the full cost of the trip. Please email our Orientation Coordinator, Amanda Reinhardt at email@example.com to apply.
Please read the trip descriptions below for additional details!
February Outdoor Orientation (FOO!)
FOO! trips offer winter outdoor adventure for small groups of 5-8 first years and 2 trained upper-class leaders. Groups will head in to the winter backcountry on skis or snowshoes for 2 days and 1 night of frosty fun and challenge. FOO trips take place in the Green Mountains of Vermont and the Adirondacks of New York. These areas, just a short drive from campus, offer endless opportunities for exploration. FOO! trips are a superb way to explore the wondrous winter landscapes.
Community Engagement Trips
Our Community Engagement trips offer indoor opportunities to become acquainted with the greater Vermont and Addison County communities through service. Students spend their days working with community partners to meet identified needs. These trips are offered in partnership with Middlebury Alternative Trips (MAlt) and are a great way to get to know the Middlebury community.

Developing Community Strength through Food Access and Housing
During this trip you will volunteer with local nonprofits that work to support community members experiencing homelessness and limited food access. You may volunteer with organizations such as the HOPE Food Shelf, the John Graham Emergency Shelter, and the Charter House Coalition. Not only will you learn about the housing and food needs in the county surrounding Middlebury College, but you will also engage in hands-on volunteer work. As part of this trip, you may find yourself cooking prepared meals for families, sorting food at a food shelf, or meeting with people at a shelter. This trip will involve staying overnight at a local school or church (sleeping bags and pads will be provided), and preparing your meals with fellow trip members (food ingredients will be provided).
Bridging the Health Gap
In Vermont, like the U.S. as a whole, there continues to be a disparity in the health outcomes and access to quality healthcare between different populations. Dive into this issue by spending time with local non-profits that tackle different aspects of the health gap. You may volunteer with the Open Door Clinic, Vermont Cares, and Special Olympics of Addison County. Not only will you learn about the health needs in the county surrounding Middlebury College, but you will also engage in hands-on volunteer work. If you care about issues of health or might be interested in going into a health profession, this is for you! This trip will involve staying overnight at a local school or church (sleeping bags and pads will be provided), and preparing your meals with fellow trip members (food ingredients will be provided).
