Fall Family Weekend 2011

A Weekend to Remember

More than 1,300 parents, grandparents, siblings, and other family members converged on campus for this year's Fall Family Weekend. Both the activities and the weather offered a great variety, as family members experienced a little bit of what their students' lives are like at Middlebury.

Our photographer, Todd Balfour, was busy capturing the weekend's spirit and events. You can watch a slideshow by clicking on the photo above or view and download Todd's photos free of charge. (You can post your own photos from the weekend on the parents' Facebook page.) On this web page, you'll also find videos and links to stories that give you a sampling of the weekend's pleasures.

Extraordinarily Ordinary

Former U.S. Poet Laureate Billy Collins held the Fall Family Weekend audience spellbound. He made us laugh, cry, reflect, and appreciate the power of poetry. He'll do the same for viewers of this video. You can also read a story about the event. Collins is introduced by Jay Parini, Axinn Professor of English and Creative Writing.

Food for Thought

There is growing interest in food studies on campus. Students, faculty, and parents in the food field discuss how a proposed new food studies minor could enrich the education at Middlebury and how the liberal arts are the best preparation for the business of food. You can also read about the event here.

Education in Action: Careers in the Common Good

Learn about opportunities for students to participate in Middlebury-funded internships in fields such as health care, international development, education, government, and socially responsible business.

Education in Action: Careers on Wall Street

Parents who work in the financial sector discuss the challenges and opportunities in the field this year and offer advice to students on how to prepare for a career in finance and how to go about getting a job in it.
