Academic Year Arrival & Departure Dates

Students are responsible for verifying the accuracy of their housing and arrival date information in advance of their arrival on campus on BANNERWEB

Students may not be on campus outside of the posted dates unless they have received special permission from their commons dean or been invited to participate in an approved college program and their housing records have been updated to reflect that change. Students are required to depart from campus 24-hours after their last exam. Students remaining on campus past official departure dates are subject to College sanctions and fines.

Early Arrival & Return Information

New Arrivals
Incoming First-Year, Transfer and Exchanges students may be approved to arrive in advance of orientation either through the International Student & Scholar Services office or as a member of an athletic team; for details, please contact ISSS or your team coach.

Returning Students
Under certain conditions, returning students may be approved to return to campus before the official September move-in date. This permission is granted by the Early Returns Committee due to participation in a campus job, student organization, athletic team or as a Residential Life staff member or orientation program leader. Applications to return to campus are submitted by groups in the Spring term of the previous academic year.

General
Students should plan to arrive on campus after 9:00 a.m. on the approved date. Students who have been approved and subsequently delay their return should notify their coordinator, group leader or team coach about arriving after the officially approved time.

Keys may be picked up from the Department of Public Safety located at 125 South Main Street.  Students residing in locations with TouchPad Locks (Coffrin, Forest, Gifford, Hepburn, Jewett, KDR, Meeker, Mill, Munford, Gifford and 51 Franklin) will be able to view their new combination in their BANNER/housing page as of 9:00 a.m. on the approved arrival day.

Students are required to verify the accuracy of their housing and arrival information in BANNER/housing page prior to arrival on campus.  Questions about this information should be directed to the group's coordinator or team coach.

Please note that before the official opening of the College campus services are at a minimum.  Services that are open are primarily preparing for the arrival of the new students and the MiddView program and may have restricted hours. Residential Life staff members will be involved in training and may not be readily available for assistance.

Permission to stay on campus is restricted to the approved individual.  Middlebury College students who are not approved, and guests, are not permitted.  Please do not provide access to roommates and common spaces of houses and suites.  There is a significant fine ($400 per day) for violating this policy.

Private social functions of any type may not be held until after the beginning of the term.  Any parties, on campus or off, will be considered a conduct violation.

Students approved to return early who are involved in any conduct violation during their stay will be removed from housing immediately and face College disciplinary action, regardless of the reason for the early return.

  • Douglas Adams, Associate Dean of Students for Residential and Student Life

Rosh Hashana Early Arrival 2015

This year, Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, occurs during Orientation. Services will be held on campus in Mead Chapel, on Wednesday evening, September 4, at 7:00 PM and Thursday morning, September 5, at 9:30 AM. For those observing the second day of Rosh Hashanah, there are services at the local Havurah on Friday, September 6, at 9:30 AM.

First Year Students:

If you plan on attending the evening Rosh Hashanah service on Wednesday, please arrange to  have completed your Advising Session prior to 5:00 PM on Wednesday, so you can promptly register for classes on line at 5:30 PM and then join with Hillel students for dinner in the Redfield-Proctor Dining Room at 6:00 PM, prior to services.

Thursday’s Tashlich Service at the Otter Creek Footbridge, Marble Works side, is at 5:00 PM.  There will be an alternative Common Reading session scheduled for those attending Tashlich.

We have made significant changes to our Orientation schedule so that registration may occur prior to the start of the holiday on Wednesday evening.

Returning Students:

Upperclass students needing to return to campus early for the observance of Rosh Hashanah may register to return on Sunday, September 13 (after 9:00 AM). Registration will be shared with your Commons Office and the Chaplain's Office.

Registrations must be received no later than Tuesday, September 8.

Students in need of additional travel time related to the religious observance
should make their request through their Commons Deans.
