Carnaval Mil Tambores: A fun event for students studying in Valpo and Viña during the fall semester!

Every student studying in Valparaíso during our fall semestPeople in colorful outfiits dancing in the street during a festivaler will hear about the carnaval Mil Tambores, a gigantic weekend festival near the end of September with drumming/dancing groups from the whole country. The big parade that ends the weekend is fun, but what I enjoyed more was finding the smaller pasacalles that meander through neighborhoods in the days before. Ariana Carter (Wellesley College), Fall 2016

Chamber Orchestra, PUCV Conservatory:
Open to young musicians in the Valpo area - no need to be a PUCV student to participate!

Looking down on a chamber orquestra in formal attire playing a song in a ballroomOne other Middlebury student and I brought our instruments (oboe and viola) to Valparaíso and were able to join the chamber orchestra of the PUCV conservatory. They rehearse twice a week in the music school in Cerro Concepción, and performed a few times during the semester. The orchestra is a mix of conservatory students, students from other universities, and young people who are out of college. As a student at the PUCV, my friend was able to ask about musical opportunities and get in contact with the conductor.  Ariana Carter (Wellesley College), Fall 2016

Social Media

Don't underestimate the power of Facebook and other social media platforms to help you connect with your host community!

I used Facebook a lot to browse events and programs in the area...you can search any topic...once you start liking things in Montevideo, Facebook will give you other events on your feed. Amanda Spiller (Bowdoin College), Middlebury School in Uruguay, Fall 2016

Spritiual Life

Iglesia Ministerio de Fe:
I'm not very religious, but via a friend from orchestra I got involved in volunteering with a church group that holds a Saturday bible school for kids in an at-risk neighborhood. They also give homework help on Wednesdays, which I never did but many exchange students do. The church is Iglesia Ministerio de Fe, which you can easily find online; in terms of beliefs and worship services, I think it's a fairly typical evangelical church. There are a lot of young people who were very welcoming of exchange students, and they do a lot to get involved in the community...I felt they were making a positive difference with their escuela comunitaria; and I had fun getting to know the kids who came.
