Middlebury Outdoor Programs

The Middlebury campus is spectacularly positioned between the Green Mountains and the Adirondack park. This location gives us easy access to a remarkable array of outdoor environments and classrooms.

Outdoor Skills Courses
MOP offers courses, trips and expeditions in a wide variety of outdoor activities. Canoeing and kayaking, rock and ice climbing, telemark skiing, backpacking, and winter camping are among the courses we offer.

Wilderness First Aid Courses
Wilderness First Aid skills are essential knowledge for all outdoor leaders, as well as those interested in personal adventures. MOP sponsors both Wilderness First Aid (WFA) and Wilderness First Responder (WFR) courses taught by SOLO.

February Outdoor Orientation

FOO! introduces incoming February first-years to their new home here in Vermont. Small groups of first years and upper class leaders venture into the mountains surrounding campus on skis and snowshoe for overnight trips. FOO! provides a wonderful opportunity to get to know other first years and establish relationships that can help ease the transition to life here at Middlebury.

MOP periodically offers trips venturing beyond our typical programming areas in New England and New York. These trips typically occur during the various recesses in our academic calendar.  Past favorites include Backcountry skiing in the Gaspe region of Quebec and climbing expeditions to Red Rock and Joshua Tree National Park.

Commons-Based Outdoor Excursions

Aimed at building community within the Commons, and providing healthy and invigorating recreational opportunities, these day-long adventures help small groups of commons residents explore our natural surroundings.

Faculty Support
MOP provides support to faculty interested in integrating outdoor experiences into their curriculum. MOP will help to plan logistics, choose sites, and coordinate outdoor leaders.

Gear For Borrow

MOP has an extensive inventory of outdoor equipment, available for borrow free of charge for your outdoor adventures! Sleeping bags, tents, snowshoes, backcountry skis, packs, stoves, and much more.

These items may be borrowed on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 4:30-7 at the MOP Equipment Room.
