Rare Books & Manuscripts
The Rare Books and Manuscripts collection contains more than 60,000 books and other materials which by virtue of their rarity, intrinsic historical value, or physical condition cannot be housed in open stacks. The core of the Rare Books collection consists of nearly ten thousand books that once comprised the original Middlebury College library, chartered six months before the founding of the College in 1800, and the libraries of 19th century student organizations including the Philomethesian and Philadelphian societies.
