Community Music

Community Music session II
Community Music session

There are several opportunities for students, faculty, and community members to share traditional music together:

Informal and often impromptu Scottish & Irish sessions occasionally take place on campus and also Carol's Hungry Mind Café. Please contact Timothy Cummings for more information.

There are also monthly Scottish fiddle sessions being hosted by the Champlain Valley Scottish Fiddle Club, on the first Sundays of each month, beginning 2pm. More information, as well as their repertoire list, can be found on their website.

Shape-note singers typically gather either in town or on campus to sing selections from The Sacred Harp on second Sundays, from 1-3pm. Please contact Debby Moody for more information: moody.debby [at] gmail.com

Under the direction of Jeffrey Buettner, the Middlebury College Choir sings music of major styles and time periods of the choral canon, folk music, world music, American music and new compositions. College Choir performs choral-orchestral works with student instrumentalists, and student soloists are featured frequently. Recent repertoire includes "Ascension Oratorio" by J.S. Bach, "Rejoice in the Lamb" by Benjamin Britten, "Triptych" by Tarik O'Regan, "Fest- und Gedenksprüche" by Johannes Brahms, "Winging Wildly" by Kirke Mechem, Requiem by Gabriel Fauré, "The King Shall Rejoice" by G. F. Handel, Missa Brevis in B Flat by Wolfgang Mozart, "Chichester Psalms” by Leonard Bernstein, Iranian folk and classical music, African American spirituals and American folk song.

The Middlebury College Choir performs concerts each semester, including as the resident ensemble of the Middlebury Bach Festival, and sings for formal College functions. In recent years the Senior Week Choral Concert has become an annual favorite of the college and community audience.

The Choir has recently toured to Montréal in 2013, Monterey and San Francisco in 2011, and to Hartford, Boston and New York City in 2009. Click here for more information about the Europe tour.
