“Unrest and the Final Resting Place: The Struggle to Establish Civil Cemeteries in Israel”
Zohar Gazit, Program in Modern Hebrew, will give a talk as part of the 2019-20 Carol Rifelj Faculty Lecture Series.
This lecture explores a struggle over death-related perceptions and practices in Israel. Religious burial societies, which operate cemeteries and perform traditional funeral ceremonies, have a monopoly on handling the dead in contemporary Jewish Israeli society. Zohar Gazit wishes to illuminate the seldom-researched topic of alternative organized activity in the field of interment, by examining A Perfect Peace, a social organization that promotes civil cemeteries.
Refreshments will be served.
