What happens when we come to know things about our research subjects that defy common citational practices. In this “Life of the Mind” talk, Lana Povitz (History Dept.) will discuss “deep acquaintance,” or the social insight that accumulates outside of and around formal research on living people. Drawing on recent experiences with oral history, Povitz asks: what role can social curiosity play in serious scholarship? How do the relationships we forge with our subjects shape the work we produce? Is this consciously relational approach to research feminist? Is it queer? Come to listen, think aloud, or share what putting the social in social research has meant to you.
Lunch will be served.
