Students at a table discussing Russian policy

Facilitating dialogue between students in Monterey and Moscow.

The GIRS-Student Scientific Society Dialogue Series

The Graduate Initiative in Russian Studies (GIRS) regularly conducts teleconferences (conducted in both Russian and English) with the Student Scientific Society (NSO) at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO) on the most pressing issues in U.S.-Russian Relations. Two students from the Middlebury Institute and two from MGIMO are divided into teams to analyze different sides of an issue, and then present together at the teleconference. Then, other participants have the opportunity to ask questions.

Through these talks, students exchange ideas, knowledge, and perspectives, contributing to the GIRS mission of educating future specialists on Russia and Eurasia via discourse of the region. Such contact between students can also lead to other educational and professional opportunities. Organizers hope that the discussions can serve to strengthen ties between Middlebury Institute and MGIMO students, as well as between American and Russian students at large.
