A Customized Language and Intercultural Course for Diplomats
Conflict is unpredictable, intercultural, and the language used to talk about conflict resolution has a relationship to the way we conceptualize and approach conflict. Whereas negotiation often happens in the rarified atmosphere of high-level diplomatic contexts, conflict resolution is inherently more social, taking place at the level of interpersonal and intercultural relationships, stakeholders with varying levels of power, and deeply rooted values and identities.
This course is designed for non-native speakers of English who work in diplomatic or conflict contexts. It takes an ethnographic approach, in which trainees will target a conflict, collect data on the language people use to talk about that conflict, analyze authentic texts regarding the conflict, and analyze the conflict and its potential change through linguistic, social, and cultural lenses.
