Chinese gay rights activist Fan Popo will host a film screening, lecture and question and answer session at the Irvine Auditorium on Tuesday, September 27 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The event is co-sponsored by two MIIS student clubs, the Chinese Student Association and Gay & Co.

Fan Popo is a gay filmmaker, writer, and activist from mainland China. His documentary films include New Beijing, New Marriage; The Chinese Closet; Taipei, City of Rainbows; and Be a Woman. His work has been shown in film festivals in Berlin, Hong Kong, Long Beach and Vancouver. The director of the Beijing LGBT Center, Popo is also the author of Happy Together: 100 Queer Films, China’s first anthology of international LGBT cinema.

In this special event, Fan will screen two of his short films: New Beijing, New Marriage (2009, 18 minutes) and Rainbow in Motion (2011, 12 minutes) (both in Mandarin Chinese with English subtitles). The screening will be followed by a talk by Fan (in English) about the social, cultural, and political climate for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people in China today. A question and answer session with the audience will conclude the event.
