The week of May 2, the Monterey Institute of International Studies will play host to a series of distinguished guest speakers on topics including the future of nuclear weapons, human rights activism around the world, and localization best practices:

“Localization for the Little Guys,” a lecture by Cameron Jahn
Tuesday, May 3 from 12:00 noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Irvine Auditorium

Cameron Jahn (MBA ’09) will discuss his experiences as a localization professional managing the launch of software into international markets. He will discuss internationalization, localization, quality assurance, and how those activities “translate” into a successful international market entry strategy. His talk will highlight the challenges and opportunities encountered by his employer, Citrix Online, in selecting language service providers, evaluating computer-assisted technology tools, and executing a full-blown country launch.

“A Nuclear Weapons Free World?” a lecture by former U.S. Secretary of Defense William J. Perry
Thursday, May 5 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Irvine Auditorium

Dr. William J. Perry was the 19th U.S. Secretary of Defense, serving from 1994 to 1997. He is currently a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution and the Michael and Barbara Berberian Professor at Stanford University, where he is co-director of the Preventive Defense Project, a research collaboration of Stanford and Harvard Universities. Dr. Perry has received numerous awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1997. In recent years, he has been working on the issue of a nuclear weapons free world with former Secretaries of State George Shultz (1982 to 1989) and Henry Kissinger (1973 to 1977), and Sam Nunn, former chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee. This event is co-sponsored by the Monterey Institute’s James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies, the Institute for Nuclear Materials Management and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

“Celebrating Human Rights: The Art of Human Rights Protection,” a conference on contemporary human rights challenges featuring keynote speaker Mike Farrell
Friday, May 6 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., and Saturday, May 7 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., in the Irvine Auditorium

Actor/activist Mike Farrell, documentary filmmaker Norman Solomon, Assemblyman Bill Monning and Congressman Sam Farr will be among the featured speakers at a conference on human rights co-hosted by the Monterey Institute of International Studies and the Monterey Bay Chapter of the United Nations Association. The conference will explore a wide range of efforts underway around the world to protect human rights through organization and collective action. The conference will open with a keynote address by Farrell, best known for his co-starring role in TV’s M*A*S*H, on Friday, May 6 at 6:00 p.m.

All three of these events will be held in the Irvine Auditorium inside the McCone Building at 499 Pierce Street (Pierce & Jefferson) in downtown Monterey.
