Dr. Sandi Smith was introduced to international education in 1986 as a kindergarten teacher in Palau, Micronesia. During two years of teaching a class of children from multiple countries and languages, she developed a passion for learning about intercultural interactions and introducing others to intercultural experiences. A culminating product of her teaching in Palau was a published kindergarten curriculum workbook in the Palauan language.

Dr. Smith focused her graduate studies in Higher Education Administration to specialize in the “Internationalization of Higher Education” and “Intercultural Development of College Students”. Serving more than 30 years as an administrator, her experience includes positions in the international offices at public and private; domestic and international; research and liberal arts institutions of higher education. As a practitioner of international education management, she has most enjoyed her experience with campus internationalization; education abroad administration, advising, assessment and program development; education abroad curriculum integration and pedagogy; intercultural communication and engagement; and developing international academic partnerships. Dr. Smith has been actively involved in professional organizations and leadership responsibilities in training professional competencies within the profession of international education management. Currently, Dr. Smith serves as an international education consultant through the Fulbright Specialist Roster.

This foundational course will introduce students to the breadth of the international education field. Course content will emphasize fundamental principles of international education through a focus on seminal literature in the field. Additionally, the course will emphasize exploration of career specializations through interactions with practitioners and individual course assignments.

This course will use discussion and case study methodologies to examine legal concepts, principles and precedence guiding best practices in the development, administration and liability of higher education international programs. Students will learn core fundamentals of higher education law relevant to international education management. Students will become familiar with key constitutional and federal law guiding colleges and universities, statutory & regulatory compliance, tort liability and negligence, and emergence of industry best standards and practices.

Logic Model Framework

This course will introduce students to the purpose and practice of utilizing logic models for design and assessment in the international education context. This course, taught in a weekend workshop, will emphasize fundamental principles and utilization of Theory of Change and the Program Logic Model. Logic Models are further developed and utilized in the IEM degree program and will specifically compliment your assignments in IEMG 8510: Design and Assessment.

As an outspoken advocate of research evidence for establishing credibility for international education, Dr. Smith focuses on the alignment of mission, vision, policies, methodologies, and outcomes; operationalizing intended learning outcomes; and synergy between the design and assessment of teaching/learning experiences. Excited by innovation in education, Dr. Smith enjoys the role of teaching, coaching, mentoring, and challenging young professionals and passing on the torch of passion and accountability to the next generation of international education leaders.
